Does Reading Harry Potter in French Help Improve It
Started reading Harry Potter in French!
Took me an 60 minutes and a one-half to read the first eight pages... That's eleven minutes per folio. Will hopefully option up the stride every bit I get more comfortable reading in French and less reliant on the dictionary. Hoping to terminate it earlier the end of the summertime.

I learnt French that fashion when I was ~16-17 and my French was awful UK loftier school level.
I tried to avoid using a dictionary for my outset readthrough because it fabricated reading too slow to actually assimilate it. Instead I underlined every word I didn't know - as well as circling as of grammar I was unsure almost (which was a good portion of the folio) and I looked up a expert chunk of it after finishing the outset book.
I noticed how fiddling I was underlining towards the cease compared to how much I underlined at the beginning then it was incredibly useful.

I was looking upwardly a lot of words at first too, only then I remembered how I learned a lot of the English language words I know. When I was a child I read a lot of quondam books and books aimed at older readers or adults, then at that place were a lot of words I didn't sympathize. I didn't stop to get a lexicon, I just kept reading anyway and I learned a lot of words just by context.
Reading in French got a lot more enjoyable for me once I decided to just read it like I read English as a child.

I recall I got halfway through the series before I realized "monter du doigt" ways "to point" and not "to show the finger." They fabricated so many other changes to the volume, I just thought that french people must casually flip each other off all the time. I did retrieve information technology was weird that my teachers never mentioned this major cultural difference.

I'm currently about halfway through information technology and I loved learning the expression "faire les 100 pas" ("to footstep" in English). I specifically remember Harry pacing about the room adjacent to Dudley's from reading the books in English beforehand, so the expression instantly clicked and for whatever reason I simply thought that "faire les 100 pas" was the all-time thing always.

Awesome :) Harry Potter was one of the first serial I read in English, considering I was also impatient to expect for the French translations :P It'south nice to meet y'all're learning French the same way I learned English!

What did you lot apply for a French dictionary on you Kindle? I don't have an Amazon account so I'm trying to discover a free dict.

I bought the paperback volume on Amazon and I don't have a Kindle. I besides bought a paperback lexicon which will be useful for when I'm camping. Otherwise I just use google translate

I simply recently did the same!! I'm at page 100 or so and information technology is already much, much easier. I'one thousand not looking upwardly words though or translating anything. I effigy I'm getting most of it through context, and I don't want to slow myself down besides much. Good luck! :)

I'm doing the same thing! The use of the passe simple takes some getting used to since information technology's the get-go French book I've tried reading that was narrated in the third person.

I started reading the first book of "A Song of Ice and Fire" in French to work on B2-C1 vocabulary, and it'due south crazily hard :(
Maybe I should try Harry Potter first...

I tried read it too after finishing the HP series and barely made it one affiliate before giving up. I hated having to go to the lexicon every other sentence for obscure and primitive words. HP is much much much easier.

I did the same. Best way to learn a language imo. In my experience, it's skillful to have a hard copy then that you can underline the words you lot don't understand.

I consider the official translation, past Jean-François Ménard, to be ameliorate than the original text. The vocabulary is much richer, for instance, but however OK for a x year old native.
